Dinosaurs
Dinosaurs are one of the most captivating subjects for young children, as they are surrounded by mystery while being something that once existed. As children are often highly imaginative, dinosaurs are something that tend to keep and hold their attention, which can be a useful tool for parents and teachers.
When introducing dinosaurs to boys or girls, it is important to appeal to what they like. If they are interested in birds, for example, introduce them to the pterodactyl. If they are interested in the more lethal types of dinosaurs, the T. Rex and Vilociraptor are good choices. No matter which type of dinosaurs you choose to expose your children to, you have an opportunity to teach them about sciences and the unknown.
Dinosaurs are often the subject of field trips, as many famous museums will include entire wings to fossils of skeletons. As there are some dinosaurs that exceed 75 feet long, they can be awe-inspiring for young children who have never seen them before. As the extinction of dinosaurs are often a hot topic of discussion in science classes, this can also help your child develop an inquisitive mind.
There are many different classes of dinosaurs. The two main branches are invertebrate dinosaurs, or dinosaurs that do not have skeletal structures, and vertebrate dinosaurs, or dinosaurs that have bones and skeletons. Insects tend to fall into the invertebrate category, while the T. Rex, Vilociraptor and Pterodactyl are all vertebrates. After that, dinosaurs tend to be categorized by their habitats, lifestyles and migration habits. Some common classifications of dinosaurs include avian, marine and reptilian. There are more classifications as well, including some that span several of these categories. For example, it is believed that there were several species of feathered reptiles, which spans the avian and reptilian categories. There is also evidence there may have been some species of mammalian marine animals, like our modern whales, another example of cross-category dinosaurs. However, the existence of mammals during the dinosaurs era, which is dominated by reptiles, is still under much dispute.
Several subjects that you can broach with those interested in dinosaurs include extinction and evolution. There is evidence of evolution through fossils, as some species of fossils appear to be ancestors of other species of fossils. The research being done in this field helps scientists learn how evolution occurred in prehistoric times, as well as how quickly the evolutions occurred.
The extinction of dinosaurs is common discussed, as there are many theories that have yet to be proven. Involving your child in these discussions can help develop their minds and get them to learn how to debate and develop supportive arguments, skills they will need later in life.
